Why is neroli oil such a prized ingredient in skincare? Crafted from the delicate flowers of the bitter Seville orange, it is believed to have first come from trees found in southeast Asia where it spread thanks to traders to Africa and the Mediterranean.
In the olden days neroli oil helped ward off the plague. Back in Ancient Egypt, it was used much like incense. But in the 12th century in Seville, Spain, it became a more popular cultivation which eventually travelled the globe, thriving in the 1500s in St. Augustine, Florida when the Spanish explorers brought it over.
But the end of the 17th century was when it became the epitome of fashionable thanks to princess Nerola of Italy. In fact, that is where the name we know it as now comes from. She would use it to add its divine fragrance to her bath water and her clothing, creating her own signature scent which naturally, everyone wanted to copy.
