You're doing everything right. Eight hours' sleep (well, six and a half, if we're being honest). Two litres of water. The same products you've trusted for years. So why does the face looking back at you in the bathroom mirror seem… tired? Drier than it used to be. A little blotchy. Maybe a fine line or two that definitely weren't part of the arrangement.

If you're nodding along, welcome – you're in excellent company. Something genuinely shifts for a lot of us somewhere around 40, and it isn't in your head. Skin starts behaving like a different person entirely: oily in some spots, flaky in others, suddenly reacting to a cream you've used happily for a decade.

Here's the good news. This is one of the most fixable problems in all of skincare – once you understand what's actually going on, and once you stop using the products designed for the skin you had at 25. This guide walks you through exactly what changes after 40, why your old routine has quietly stopped pulling its weight, and the simpler, gentler approach that tends to work far better. Plus the Indagare line-up we'd reach for first.

Grab a cuppa. Let's get into it.

First, what's actually happening to your skin after 40?

The short version: your hormones are renegotiating the terms.

As we move through our 40s and towards menopause, oestrogen levels gradually decline. Oestrogen is a bit of a backstage hero for skin – it helps keep things hydrated, supple and bouncy. As it tapers off, a few visible changes tend to follow:

    • Skin gets drier and can feel tight, even if you've always leaned oily.

    • It looks less plump, because the scaffolding underneath (collagen and elastin) isn't being topped up as quickly as it once was.

    • Fine lines and crepiness become more noticeable, especially around the eyes.

    • Pigmentation and uneven tone appear – often the bill arriving for all those sunny Aussie summers we enjoyed decades ago.

    • Skin becomes more sensitive and reactive, sometimes flushing or stinging at products it used to tolerate without complaint.

None of this means anything has gone wrong. It's a completely normal stage of life – but it does mean the rulebook has changed. For a closer look at the hormonal side of the story, our guide to skincare through perimenopause and menopause unpacks it properly.

Woman over 40 with changing skin

Why your trusty old routine suddenly isn't working

Here's the frustrating part. So many products marketed at “ageing skin” are built around stripping and resurfacing – strong foaming cleansers, high-strength acids, that squeaky-clean feeling we were once told to chase.

The problem? On skin that's already drier and more easily irritated, all that stripping is pouring petrol on the fire. You cleanse, your skin feels tight, so you slather on a rich cream, which can clog things and trigger breakouts (yes – breakouts and wrinkles at the same time, the cruellest double act in beauty), and round and round it goes.

If your skincare leaves your face feeling tight, that isn't “clean” – that's your barrier waving a small white flag. After 40, the goal shifts from stripping skin back to supporting it: feeding the barrier, locking in moisture, and choosing ingredients that work with reactive skin rather than against it.

What to actually look for in skincare for women over 40

A few simple principles will save you a lot of money and heartache:

Gentle, non-stripping cleansing. You want to lift off the day without removing your skin's natural oils. Powder and cream cleansers tend to be far kinder than squeaky foams.

Oils and nutrient-rich formulas over heavy occlusive creams. Good plant oils are similar in structure to the lipids your skin makes naturally, so they sink in and genuinely nourish rather than just sitting on top. They're brilliant for that drier, thirstier over-40 skin.

Fewer, better products. You do not need a 10-step routine. You need a small handful of things that actually do something. (Frankly, who has the time?)

Clean ingredients you can pronounce. Sensitised skin doesn't need synthetic fragrance, parabens or harsh sulphates, which can wind reactive skin up further.

This matters more after 40, not less. If you want the full rundown, here's why hormone-disrupting ingredients are worth avoiding.

Results you can see, claims you can trust. Look for appearance-focused promises and, ideally, a stack of real reviews from women your own age.

The ingredients worth looking for (and the hype to ignore)

Walk down any skincare aisle and you'll be promised the moon. After 40, only a few ingredients genuinely earn their keep. Here are the ones we formulate around, and what they actually do for changing skin:

Prickly pear seed oil. The jewel in the Moroccan crown, and our most-used hero. It takes close to a tonne of fruit to press a single litre, which is partly why it's so prized.

It's exceptionally high in vitamin E and skin-loving fatty acids, absorbs cleanly without a greasy film, and leaves skin looking brighter, plumper and calmer. Brilliant for redness-prone, over-40 skin.

    Prickly pear seed oil

Hibiscus. The “natural botox plant.” Its gentle fruit acids help resurface and brighten the look of skin, and it's associated with firmer, smoother-looking skin over time, without the harshness of stronger acids.

Rhassoul clay. A mineral-rich Moroccan clay that draws out congestion and refines the look of pores, while being far gentler than the drying clays that leave skin feeling stripped.

Sea buckthorn. A tiny orange berry that's one of the few plants to carry all four omegas – 3, 6, 7 and 9 – including the rare omega-7 that mirrors skin's own oils.

It's also packed with vitamin C in a gentle oil form (no stinging acid serum), so even reactive skin can enjoy the brightening – leaving skin looking nourished, even and resilient.

    Hibiscus and Rhassoul in Indagare

Neroli. Distilled from orange blossom, this is the calming one – a soothing, antioxidant-rich botanical that helps skin look balanced, toned and a touch brighter. (It also smells divine, which never hurts at 7am.)

Geranium. The great balancer – it helps skin look even, clear and toned, which makes it a quiet hero for combination skin that can't decide whether it's oily or dry.

Colloidal oatmeal. The quiet achiever for sensitive, reactive skin: soothing, comforting and quietly hydrating.

And the hype to take with a grain of salt? Anything promising to “erase” wrinkles overnight, “detox” your skin in one wash, or work miracles in 24 hours. Real skincare works with your skin's renewal cycle, not against the laws of biology. Be a little sceptical of any claim that sounds like a magic trick.

Neroli is a natural vitamin C even sensitive skin can enjoy, used in Indagare

The best skincare routine for women over 40: a simple day & night plan

Here's the routine we'd build for over-40 skin using the Indagare range – gentle, nourishing and refreshingly short. (Everything is made here in Australia, PETA-certified cruelty-free, and formulated without synthetic fragrance, parabens or mineral oils.)

    Morning

Step 1 – Cleanse with Luminesq Dust Face Cleanser. A powder-to-foam cleanser that turns into a soft, creamy lather in your palms. It's built around blue butterfly pea flower, colloidal oatmeal, hibiscus and sweet orange, so it lifts away overnight build-up without that tight, stripped feeling. Hibiscus – sometimes called the “natural botox plant” – brings gentle fruit acids that help smooth and brighten the look of skin as you cleanse. A genuinely lovely first step for dry or reactive skin.

Step 2 – Serum: Illumino Youth Serum. Our hero, and the one customers fall hardest for. It's certified-organic prickly pear seed oil – one of the most prized facial oils in the world – with a touch of neroli and geranium. Prickly pear is rich in vitamin E, vitamin K and skin-loving fatty acids, and it's the reason so many people describe their skin as brighter, plumper and more hydrated within a few weeks. Press 4–5 drops into clean, slightly damp skin (always upwards – we don't drag). It sinks in beautifully and layers happily under a moisturiser or SPF.

Step 3 (optional) – Eyes: Prickly Pear Eye Roller. The eye area is thinner and tends to show the years first. A few cooling rolls of pure prickly pear seed oil help soften the look of fine lines and dark circles. Bonus: the rollerball feels wonderful at 7am.

Don't forget your SPF. Daily sunscreen is the single most effective anti-ageing step there is – genuinely the best money you'll ever spend on your skin. Especially here, under the Australian sun.

    Once or twice a week

Atonement Superfood Clay Face Mask. Your at-home facial.

Moroccan rhassoul clay draws out congestion, while pineapple enzymes, white willow bark, bamboo and a cocktail of superfoods (cranberry, pomegranate, green tea, olive leaf) gently buff away dullness and brighten everything up.

It took out Best Clay Mask, Superfood, at the Beauty Shortlist Awards – and one use is enough to see why. Skin looks clearer, smoother and lit from within. (You'll literally look like you've had 12 hours' sleep, even if you haven't!)

    Night

Step 1 – Cleanse with Luminesq again to remove the day. For makeup or sunscreen, press in a couple of drops of Illumino first, then cleanse – it melts everything away.

Step 2 – Night oil: Signature Night Recovery Face Oil. Skin does its repair work while you sleep, and this is what we'd hand it to work with. Eighteen botanicals – rose, prickly pear, pomegranate, sea buckthorn and jasmine among them – deliver a hit of omega fatty acids and antioxidants overnight.

It took Best Overnight Facial Oil at the 2023 Beauty Shortlist Awards. Massage in 4–6 drops and wake up to skin that looks rested, soft and noticeably more glowy. It's the step customers tell us they'd never give up.

5 common over-40 skincare mistakes (and easy fixes)

    1. Over-cleansing. That squeaky, tight feeling isn't a badge of honour – it's a stripped barrier.

Fix: switch to a gentle, non-foaming cleanser and do a proper cleanse only at night.

    2. Chasing strong actives. Piling on potent acids and retinoids hoping for faster results often leaves sensitised skin red, flaky and worse off.

Fix: go gentler, introduce anything active slowly, and judge it over weeks, not days.

    3. Skipping SPF on cloudy days. UV doesn't take a sick day, and it's responsible for the lion's share of visible ageing.

    Fix: daily SPF, no exceptions.

    4. Forgetting the neck and chest. Your face stops at your collarbones, but your skincare doesn't have to.

Fix: take your serum and oil down over your neck and décolletage too.

    5. Giving up too soon. Two weeks is not a fair trial.

Fix: commit to a simple routine for a solid eight to twelve weeks before you decide whether it's working.

    Targeting your specific concern

“Over 40” is not one-size-fits-all. Here's where to head next, depending on what's bothering you most:

Dark spots & uneven tone. Pigmentation is one of the most common over-40 frustrations. Our guide to fading the look of hyperpigmentation naturally covers the ingredients that help.

Fine lines & loss of firmness. If softening lines is the priority, read up on why hibiscus earned its “natural botox plant” nickname, plus our pick of the best natural oils for anti-ageing.

Perimenopause & menopause. Hormonal skin has its own rulebook – the best skincare routine for menopausal skin breaks it down.

In your 50s and beyond. Skin keeps evolving. Here's how your skin's needs change from 50 onwards.

Sensitive & reactive skin. If redness and reactivity are your main concern, our calming, sensitive-skin approach is the place to start.

How long until you see a difference?

The honest answer: give it time, but not as much as you might fear. Most people notice their skin feels softer and more comfortable within the first week or two – that barrier relief is fast.

The bigger-picture changes – brighter tone, smoother texture, a healthier-looking glow – tend to land around the four-to-eight-week mark, because that's roughly how long your skin takes to renew itself.

By the three-month point is when people tend to get slightly evangelical about it. Consistency beats intensity every single time. (And do patch test first – sensible at any age.)

Why women over 40 choose Indagare

A quick word on why this range in particular. Indagare wasn't built by bolting a "mature skin" line onto an existing range as an afterthought.

It's built on lightweight, nutrient-dense plant oils – prickly pear, argan, the eighteen botanicals in the Signature Night Recovery oil – chosen because they're such a natural match for skin that's drier, more reactive and changing.

Oils like these are close in structure to the lipids your own skin makes, so they nourish deeply without the heaviness or the stripping that changing skin copes so badly with.

That's exactly why they suit this stage of life so well – and why so many women over 40 come back for them.

Today every Indagare product is made in Adelaide, PETA-certified cruelty-free, and formulated without the synthetic fragrance, parabens and sulphates that reactive skin can happily do without.

Our prickly pear and argan oils are sourced from women's cooperatives in Morocco, where the people doing the work are paid fairly for it. And with more than 1,500 five-star reviews from women who know exactly what changing skin feels like, you're in good hands.

Clean beauty. Serious results. That's the whole idea.

There's a quiet myth that effective, clean skincare has to come with a three-figure department-store price tag and a sales assistant who makes you feel slightly inadequate.

We don't believe that for a second. Because our oils are so concentrated, you use very little – a few drops a day – so a single bottle stretches for months. That's luxury that's genuinely within reach, and skin that's looked after rather than lectured at.

    The bottom line..

Your skin in your 40s isn't a problem to be fixed – it's simply asking for something different to what worked before. Gentler, more nourishing, a little simpler. Get that right, and this can honestly be the best your skin has looked in years.

    Frequently asked questions:

What's the best skincare routine for women over 40?

Keep it simple and gentle: a non-stripping cleanser, a nourishing facial oil or serum morning and night, a weekly mask, and – non-negotiable – daily SPF. After 40, supporting your skin barrier matters far more than scrubbing or stripping it. Our Luminesq cleanserIllumino Youth Serum and Signature Night Recovery Oil cover the essentials.

Should women over 40 use face oils or moisturisers?

You can use both, but a quality plant oil does a lot of the heavy lifting for drier, over-40 skin because it's so similar to your skin's own lipids. Many women find a nourishing oil like Illumino, used alone or layered under a light moisturiser, is all they need.

Can I use facial oil if my skin is oily or breaks out?

Yes – this one surprises people. The right oils (prickly pear is a star here) are lightweight and can actually help balance oilier, hormonal skin rather than worsen it. Stripping that skin tends to backfire and trigger even more oil.

Why has my skincare stopped working in my 40s?

Declining oestrogen makes skin drier, thinner and more reactive, so products built for younger skin – especially strong, stripping ones – often stop suiting it. The fix is usually gentler, more nourishing formulas, not stronger ones.

Is natural skincare actually effective for ageing skin?

It can be very effective when it's well formulated with high-quality ingredients – think prickly pear seed oil, hibiscus and rhassoul clay. “Natural” on its own is no guarantee, so look for real reviews and appearance-focused results. (Our reviews are a good place to start.)

How long before I see results?

Comfort and softness often within a week or two; visible brightness and texture changes around four to eight weeks; the proper “is your skin doing something different?” comments around the three-month mark. Consistency is everything.
